Who We Are
DeFlock Birmingham is a grassroots coalition of residents, privacy advocates, and concerned citizens working to bring transparency and accountability to surveillance technology in our city.
We believe Birmingham residents deserve to know:
- How many cameras are watching our streets
- Who has access to our location data
- What policies govern how this data is used, stored, and shared
- Whether our rights under Alabama law are being protected
Why This Matters
In a democracy, the government answers to the people—not the other way around. When nearly 1,500 surveillance cameras can track your movements without your knowledge or consent, that relationship flips.
This isn't about being "anti-police" or "anti-safety." It's about ensuring that powerful surveillance tools come with powerful accountability measures. We support effective public safety—we just believe it shouldn't come at the cost of constitutional rights or operate in total secrecy.
What We're Doing
- Researching the scope and impact of Flock camera deployment in Birmingham
- Educating residents about their rights and the implications of mass surveillance
- Advocating for transparency policies and civilian oversight
- Building a coalition of voices demanding accountability from city leaders
Get Involved
This movement grows with every voice. Sign our petition to demand transparency from City Council, share your experience to help us understand community concerns, or spread the word to neighbors and friends.
Change happens when ordinary people refuse to accept the status quo. Birmingham's surveillance network was built without public input—but its future doesn't have to be.
DeFlock Birmingham is not affiliated with any political party or candidate. We believe surveillance accountability is a nonpartisan issue that affects all Birmingham residents regardless of politics.
