Where this data comes from
This map combines two independent sources. Neither comes from Flock Safety or the City of Birmingham, because neither has published a list.
Flock's own device records. The colored dots are a copy of Flock Safety's production device database as it stood on December 14, 2025, cut to Alabama. Security researcher Joshua Michael obtained the records through an authentication flaw he had reported to Flock a month earlier and that was still open; he published the full dataset and his analysis at flocksurveillance.org under a CC BY 4.0 license. Flock has publicly denied that its systems were breached. Each record carries a location, Flock's own camera name, a device type, and a status. We show all three statuses because the planned records are the clearest public view of where the network is going next.
Community-mapped cameras. The hollow black rings are cameras that volunteers have found on the ground and added to OpenStreetMap through the DeFlock project. This is the same data behind the deflock.me map. It is accurate where it exists, and it is incomplete: statewide, roughly one in four of the Flock records has a community-mapped camera near it. Every colored dot without a ring is a camera nobody has photographed yet. You can fix that at deflock.me.
How to read it
- Plate readers photograph every vehicle that passes and log the plate, make, color, and time.
- Raven mics are microphones sold as gunshot detectors. Flock's own software records the audio they capture.
- Video / PTZ are Flock's general surveillance cameras, including steerable pan-tilt-zoom models.
- Edge boxes and gateways are the hardware that pulls other companies' cameras, such as a city's existing traffic or pole cameras, into Flock's system.
Status is Flock's own label: in service, planned, or removed. Positions are the coordinates in Flock's records and may be off by a few meters. The snapshot is a single day in December 2025; cameras installed since then are not on it, and some shown may have moved.
